Welcome to Holt Online Info, a personal website for Ian Holt. This latest website is running on an Etomite Content Management system (external link), a move away from the previous site based on a Mambo CMS. Why the change? Well, this new CMS is compliant with XHTML (with a bit of tweaking) - that is the reason. I really believe that XHTML is the way forward. However, the compliance with these standards is not as straightforward as previous standards. A higher degree of effort is required by a website designer, but ultimately I believe this is worth it.
So, why bother with all the effort when creating a website? Why not ignore the standards and take the easy route? For me it is all about accessibility, making content more readily available, not restricting users - this is a personal crusade, nothing more and most of all I enjoy the challenge. Hopefully, through the students I teach, fellow web developers, I can raise awareness of accessibility issues.
